The East Cooper Montessori Charter School adolescent program consists of one community of 7th and 8th graders with three lead teachers. The community has a 1:13 educator/student ratio. Each lead teacher holds SC certification, Montessori adolescent certification and Gifted and Talented endorsement.
The mission of the ECMCS adolescent program is to create an authentic Montessori learning environment incorporating service learning, stewardship of the environment, personal reflection and expression, and rigorous academic studies in order to enable students to become self-confident, self-motivated, socially responsible individuals who make a positive contribution to the larger communities around them.
Our middle school learning community does not solely focus on developing cognitive potential, but also focuses on the physical and psychosocial needs of the adolescent, such as exercise and fresh air; relationships with other adults; practicing adult roles; meaningful, relevant learning experiences; opportunities to talk and be heard; interest in social justice; critical and concrete to abstract thinking. Our student-led community meetings, land based science studies, Mock Trial program, primary reading buddy program, student-run business, recycling/composting programs, silent personal reflection, field studies, community service, internships, financial projects, seminars, debates and extended overnight trips are all parts of our program that influence the development of the whole child.
